Global Shading Day: Why Smarter Shading Matters More Than Ever
21 March 2026
On March 21st, Global Shading Day puts the spotlight on a simple but increasingly essential idea: preventing overheating before it starts. Organized by the European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO), the initiative highlights how solar shading can improve comfort, reduce energy use and help buildings become more climate-resilient. For 2026, the campaign theme is “Shading makes a difference.”
The message is timely. According to ES-SO, buildings account for 40% of European energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves are making overheating a growing issue in homes, offices and public buildings. ES-SO’s position is clear: solar shading should no longer be seen as an optional add-on, but as a core element of sustainable building design.
The potential impact is significant. ES-SO says smart solar shading could reduce space-cooling energy use in European buildings by up to 60% by 2050, while also helping to avoid up to 100 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions and delivering up to €285 billion in savings. In this context, shading becomes much more than a comfort feature: it is a practical and scalable response to one of the biggest challenges facing buildings today.
This is exactly where Nice Sun Shading solutions make a difference. By helping manage solar gain before heat enters the building, they support a more intelligent approach to indoor comfort and energy efficiency. From indoor blinds to awnings and outdoor screens, Nice solutions are designed to improve everyday wellbeing, protect living spaces and integrate seamlessly into connected smart-home ecosystems.
Among these solutions, Nice’s Next AutoTorque® stands out as one of the most advanced innovations in the Nice Sun Shading portfolio. Introduced as a flagship solution within the Next range of tubular motors for exterior applications, it was also recognized with an Innovation Award at R+T 2024 in the category “Drive and Control Systems for Roller Shutters and Sun Shading Systems.” This recognition underlines the value of a technology designed to make sun shading smarter, more efficient and easier to manage.
What makes Next AutoTorque® especially relevant is its combination of adaptability, performance and efficiency. The motor is designed for awning applications from 20 Nm to 50 Nm, making it suitable for a wide range of installations and simplifying the choice for installers across different sun shading configurations. Thanks to its patented self-learning technology, the motor recognizes the actual effort required during movement and delivers power accordingly, rather than applying unnecessary force throughout the entire operation.
This intelligent torque management translates into tangible benefits. The technology ensures that energy is delivered according to the specific effort required during operations, allowing a 35% reduction in energy consumption compared to its predecessors. This also has a direct impact on usability: the installation phase becomes easier and faster, and the motor offers a working time up to three times longer than conventional tubular motors of the same size, which typically require cooling after only a few minutes of continuous operation.
Another key advantage is acoustic comfort. Next AutoTorque® has been developed to deliver smoother and quieter movement, with refined speed transitions and more controlled start-and-stop phases. This is particularly valuable in residential applications, where awnings are often used close to terraces, windows and outdoor living areas, and where silent operation contributes directly to the overall user experience.
Its value becomes even more evident when combined with climatic automation. Integrated with a climatic sensor, Next AutoTorque® uses climatic speed control to adjust operation based on environmental conditions. In the event of strong wind, for example, the motor can close the awning quickly — up to 20 rpm — helping protect the system from possible damage. This ability to react quickly and precisely to changing weather conditions improves both the durability of the awning and the reliability of the installation.
From an installer’s perspective, this also means greater practicality. Faster reaction, reduced overheating and longer continuous working time help streamline setup and adjustment activities, making installation more efficient and reducing downtime caused by thermal stops. In short, Next AutoTorque® is not only a benefit for end users in daily operation, but also a concrete advantage for professionals working on-site.
On Global Shading Day, the broader message is clear: the future of comfort is not about relying more heavily on active cooling, but about designing buildings that perform better from the start. Smarter solar shading can reduce cooling demand, increase comfort and support a more sustainable way of living.
